(a) Soil Thermal Treatment

What are thermal treatment methods?

Thermal desorption is an environmental remediation technology that utilizes heat to increase the volatility of contaminants such that they can be removed (separated) from the solid matrix (typically soil, sludge or filter cake) without thermally destroying them.

Thermal desorption is not incineration. The volatilized contaminants are then either collected or thermally destroyed. A thermal desorption system therefore has two major components; the desorbed itself and the off gas treatment system.

Indirect fired rotary disrobers: Most indirect fired rotary systems use an inclined rotating metallic cylinder to heat the feed material. The heat transfer mechanism is usually conduction through the cylinder wall. In this type of system neither the flame nor the products of combustion can contact the feed solids or the off gas.

Direct fired rotary disrobers have been used extensively over the years for petroleum contaminated soils and soils contaminated with hazardous wastes.

The majority of these systems utilize a secondary combustion chamber (afterburner) or catalytic oxidizer to thermally destroy the volatilized organics.

ISC is collaborated with Nelson Environmental Remediation Ltd, http://www.ner.ab.ca

Off gas treatment

The volatilized contaminants in the off gas are collected and destroyed. In addition to managing the volatilized components, the particulate solids (dust) that exit the desorbed must also be removed from the off gas. The destruction unit may be called an afterburner, secondary combustion chamber, or thermal oxidizer.

When a collection system is used, the off gas is cooled to condense the bulk of the volatilized components into a liquid. The off gas will exit most disrobers in the 350-900 °F range. The off gas is then typically cooled to somewhere between 120 and 40 °F to condense the bulk of the volatilized water and organic contaminants. Even at 40 °F, there may be measurable amounts of non-condensed organics. For this reason, after the condensation step, further treatment of the off gas is usually required. The cooled off gas may be treated by carbon adsorption, or thermal oxidation. Thermal oxidation can be accomplished using a catalytic oxidizer, an afterburner or by routing the off gas to the combustion heat source for the desorbed. The volume of gas requiring treatment for indirect fired disrobers is a fraction of that required for a direct fired desorbed. This requires smaller air pollution control trains for the gaseous process vent emissions.

Disrobers using off gas destruction systems use combustion to thermally destroy the volatilized organics components forming CO, CO2, NOx, SOx and HCl.

Easy transport and fast setup.

The foundation of this design is the efficient soil processor which reduces the amount of combustion air required to fire the burners. The smaller airstreams size, in turn, reduces the size of the other major components, the thermal oxidizer, the heat exchanger and the bag house. Added to this mechanical advantage are other customized components, like high temperature pleated filter bags, a triple pass heat exchanger, and lightweight foam insulation that have the same heat retention value as hard refractory twice the thickness.

·         Reduced airflow

·         Custom heat exchanger

·         Highway-legal trailer

·         High efficiency 400-tube, air-to-air heat exchanger instantly reduces temperatures from 1000o C to 200o C (1800 F to 400 F) between the thermal oxidizer and bag house.

ID Fan

In order to manage the complex air flow through the various components of the unit, a powerful l.D. fan automatically senses the air pressures required for hydrocarbon destruction and for recycling clean air from the combustion system to the atmosphere.

Bag house

The bag house controls particulate emissions by extracting clean dust from the airstreams and conveying it back to the pug mill for rehydration.

Thermal Oxidizer

Hydrocarbons released in the material processor are converted to water vapor and carbon dioxide within the thermal oxidizer. The unit provides a 2-second residence time for >99% hydrocarbon destruction.

Heat Exchanger

In some applications, it's important to instantly reduce the thermal oxidizer gas output to below 200C (400F). The unit is fitted with a powerful, air-tight heat exchanger.

Thermal treatment is an environmentally responsible treatment method and ISC can serve your company’s needs.

(b) Soil Physical/Chemical Treatment Services

Physical/chemical Treatment Processes are management and operating operations currently delivering truly revolutionary remediation results.  In short, the following is a description and outline of the technical capabilities of the process. ISC’s technologies offer the market alternatives for traditional soil, water and dredge remediation in three distinct and dynamic ways - all of which will reduce or eliminate environmental liabilities:

FASTER

ISC’s treatment system can perform in hours what other competitive technologies take months and /or years to complete

LOWER COST

More affordable solutions when compared to other technologies, particularly those requiring transportation or landfill / disposal.

GREENER

Comprehensive solutions that clean to pre-determined parameters or have the ability to eliminate a higher percentage of pollutants without harmful byproducts or sterilization, including aromatics.  After the ISC process, remediated soils have the potential of Beneficial Reuse (i.e. recycling remediated materials into renewable building materials).

Chemical oxidation technology is cost effective for both Hazardous and Non-Hazardous contaminants and can be applied to any form of organic pollution including hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, human / animal waste, agricultural waste (fertilizer & pesticide), and industrial contaminants such as Creosote, Perchloroethylene or Tetrachloroethylene and Pentachlorophenol's (PCP's).

(c ) Soil Biological Treatment Services

1- Bioreactor

A bioreactor is a vessel in which is carried out a chemical process which involves organisms or biochemically active substances derived from such organisms.

Under optimum conditions the microorganisms or cells will reproduce at an astounding rate. The vessel's environmental conditions like gas (i.e., air, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide) flow rates, temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen levels, and agitation speed need to be closely monitored and controlled. Optimal oxygen transfer is perhaps the most difficult task to accomplish.

ISC had been teaming with one of the world famous bioreactor design and operating companies, Petrozyme. The Petrozyme Process©, enables the on site handling and treatment of hazardous oily wastes. The Petrozyme Process© is a reactor-based biological process for the degradation of oily sludge wastes from petroleum activities. The Petrozyme Process© utilizes advanced fermentation technology to degrade the major hydrocarbon components in petroleum.

The core technology involves high rate biodegradation of hydrocarbons in an aerated bio-reactor supplied with a proprietary nutrient blend and bacterial culture. Reactor design and process operating conditions promote growth of highly active populations of bacteria that rapidly degrade the hydrocarbon sludge to H2O and CO2. Typical total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations input to the Petrozyme Process© are in the 10 - 30% range.

A typical treatment time at 28° - 32° C (82° - 90° F) is 10 days. The major residue at the end of treatment is a water phase having very low hydrocarbon concentration (<1% TPH). The water may be recycled or processed in a waste water treatment plant. As the water contains high populations of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria, it may also be used to treat hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. Small quantities of solids that settle can be delisted from the hazardous waste list for safe "non-hazardous" disposal.

Petrozyme Process© Benefits

·         30-50% savings over conventional dewatering/disposal methods

·         low liability - no offsite transportation or disposal of hazardous wastes

·         low capital cost - equipment can be financed with low monthly rental fee

·         low operating costs tied to sludge volumes treated - no standby fees

2- Land treatment (land farming)

Land treatment for petroleum wastes (land farming) has been used for several decades at locations throughout the world. Land farming is an active process that accomplishes degradation of organic, immobilization of inorganic, and results in the transformation of hazardous constituents to less hazardous and non-hazardous constituents.

Wastes that can be land farmed are:

·         Refinery wastes

·         Waste oil and lubricating oils

·         Industrial, non-hazardous wastes

·         Sludge

·         Animal and vegetable oils

Through land farming, the organic materials in the waste are broken down. In many areas where the disposal of oily sludge in the sanitary landfill is unacceptable, the disposal of oily sludge by soil biodegradation is considered to be an acceptable method. ISC shall operate, and manage a landform facility that can solve the client waste problems economically and with cost effective and realistic solutions.
